The Story
This is Fairlington, VA. Its name comes from a combination of Fairfax and Arlington. Let's go into its history!
President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Defense Homes Corporation right before the United States entered World War II. The government had already started building the Pentagon in August 1941. The corporation used emergency funds to create housing for civilians and military defense personnel nearby.
By 1945, at the cos t of $35 million, over $600 million in today's dollars, almost 3.5k units were created in Fairlington.
Two years later, the Defense Homes Corporation sold the property and soon after, the independent City of Alexandria annexed Fairfax County's portion of Fairlington, rendering the name an anachronism.
Today, Fairlington is organized into seven, independent condo associations.
