Koreans of Annandale VA

Annandale, VA

The Story

The Korean American community in the Washington, D.C., metro area is the third-largest in the nation, most of which live in Virginia and Maryland. In Virginia, Annandale and Centreville have the largest concentrations.

Annandale's Korean population took off in the early 1990s, as a collection of restaurants, dry cleaners, and stores. Korean community leaders credited the Fairfax Korean community's growth to the good public schools and nonstop flights between Washington Dulles International Airport and Incheon Airport circa 2000.

In 2005, a Korean telephone book listed 929 businesses in Annandale that catered to Koreans, about one-third of all Korean businesses in the Washington area. Over half of the businesses in Annandale are run by Koreans.

Even, the nearby George Mason University has a campus in Incheon, South Korea.
