The Story
Who controls Northern Virginia?
Besides Alexandria, each county in Northern Virginia is run by a Board of Supervisors. Fairfax County, the largest jurisdiction is split into 9 districts of similar populations, each with a Supervisor elected by their district members.
All voters in the county vote for the chairman. The Board elects the vice-chairman annually from among its members.
So what do they do?
The Board sets county government policy, passes resolutions and ordinances, approves the budget, sets local tax rates, approves land use plans, and makes appointments to various positions. These actions are taken in open meetings, which the public is encouraged to attend.
