The Story
A giant mall, a highway interchange. These are all words used to describe Tysons, VA. But what really is it?
Technically it's an unincorporated community that encompasses Vienna and Mclean, Virginia. Tysons is Fairfax County's central business district with the largest concentration of office space in Northern Virginia.
The general vibe is corporate, but it’s going through a major redevelopment. It's pretty car-heavy despite the Metro.
There are many walkable islands. These include The Boro, Capital One Campus, Arbor Row, Tysons West, Tysons Mall, etc. These mini-districts within Tysons are all walkable and have urban amenities, but it’s tricky getting between them.
A TON of housing has been added to the Tysons area. The infill is being concentrated where it can be handled best. You will see a lot of shiny new buildings, new restaurants, and improved infrastructure around these mini-districts.
Tysons began as a glorified suburban office park anchored by 2 large regional malls and is in the process of being redeveloped into a proper interconnected urban core.
